This was a brave play at the time it was written. It is very much a mark of its time but the raging anger of the play just doesn't hold up anymore.
The casting and all the rest of it are wonderful but the tone is now perfectly tired. The psychological deconstruction, the confrontation, the subtext, innuendo and contrivance has been done a jillion times since then and it's no longer that interesting.
I sat through it and enjoyed it for the acting and set design, directing, etc. but it's now just doesn't work nearly as well. Snarky, sarcastic, out and proud character study was groundbreaking in 1970 when the original film came out even if it wasn't the greatest script. But there was no reason to do it all over again and it's dated in the wrong way. Perhaps casting someone else instead of Jim Parsons may have helped slightly, but ultimately this appeals to a very narrow audience and feels like a bad broadway wait...
